Guardians of Home: Traditional Statues of Property Protection

Many old houses and important buildings were guarded by stone images that represented protection by the other world. If your tastes run to statuary and wish to explore the idea of decorating your house with silent guardians, consider the following:

Fu Dog (also known as Fu Lion, Foo Dog, lion of Buddha, or Shishi Imperial Guardian Lion):

Fu Dogs come in pairs, as the female (characterized by breeding only in the left leg) guards the people living indoors, while the men (whose right leg is based on a ball) guards the home itself. Chinese Fu dogs were actually paintings of lions, but as lions are not native to China, the original artists had to use the model closer to hand, that domestic dogs have been used for more purposes care.

Sphinx:

Sphinxes are figures of lions with human heads, which were the guardians of the important structures. The most famous sphinx guards the pyramids of Giza. Another famous Oedipus sphinx was defeated by hitting his enigma. The word "gargoyle" sounds gothic and mysterious, but it came from French "gargouille" which means "throat" or "gargle". This is because the origins earlier this image was the decoration stone by a water pipe that runs from the roof away from the sides of a building. However, they were also used for protection, to ward off evil spirits. This is why so many depictions of gargoyles are ugly, fantastic creatures.
